We now move to the bit you have been waiting for - when we recognise the achievements of all our club swimmers and present awards to a large proportion of them to mark their endeavour and success. I am pleased to welcome our new president Howard Willis who will join us to present tonight's awards.
A special reminder to the winners: some of these awards (the cups and shields) are only yours for a year many of them are very old and some are very valuable. Please do look after them and do not put them on Ebay treat them with care and clean them with the proper cleaning materials. If you get one of these awards, you will get an insurance statement that needs to be signed and returned to the Treasurer immediately. Because you cannot keep these trophies we will at next years AGM give you a replica award and certificate to mark the achievement the replicas and certificates for our year of 2016 trophy winners are over there waiting for collection.
Also if you receive an award and are no longer a member of the club, we have special replica awards and certificates for you to collect tonight.
Speed Award Certificates (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum)
During 2017 the club has continued to monitor progress of our swimmers using the ASA Sprint Awards. The times are shown on the club website.
When a swimmer achieves the qualifying times in all four competitive strokes and the individual medley we present them with their certificate. So tonight we would like to congratulate swimmers in each of the following categories.

Club Championships Records:
As usual we held three Club Championships during the year. Points are awarded for each event and the overall age group winner for the boys and for the girls respectively is presented with the age group award. However special mention goes to those swimmers who on the night of the club champs swim the fastest time recorded at the club championships for that event.
We had several championship records broken this year. The full list of new club championship records is now being shown. We have certificates to mark these achievements to present to the swimmers concerned.

Most Improved Swimmer Cup:
This year it was without question who this award should go too. I can reveal that two swimmers will share this award. The first has improved incredibly in training and racing. He has set eleven club records this year including two championship records. He broke the championship record in the 1500m Freestyle, a swim under 20 minutes that hasnt been done in seven years and a record that hasnt been broken since 2008. He really is an incredible asset to the club and is going to have a huge few years to come starting with counties again next weekend and hopefully he will qualify for regionals this year.
The second person receiving this award is someone who I personally almost gave up on during my early years of coaching where I felt there was no drive to compete or train properly inside this young female. We thought as coaches that it may be best for her to choose the swim for fitness route in swimming however she was certain she could prove to us what shes made of and WOW what a transformation we have seen over the years. It was only until the last Arena league last year where she swam a 100m Freestyle just before my event where she went a 106 and almost came 1st. This is when I realised how good she has become. I actually got quite emotional and did apologise for not fully believing in her back when I was eighteen. I will always use this lovely female in stories I will tell my coaching kids in years to come with a message of too never give up and that if you believe in yourself and push yourself you can achieve a lot!
You have probably guessed now who these two are, they are also in the same family. The winners of the most improved swimmer cup are
Michael & Eleanor Kirwan.
Endeavour Plaques:
We also like to recognise swimmers who consistently work hard in training and always approach swimming with a positive mind set.

Overall Endeavour Award (Bill Dowse Goblet):
We now need to present the overall endeavour award. This swimmer joined in 2016 and is someone who always has a smile on his face. He is one of the most enthusiastic swimmers I have ever coached and has a real willingness to correct his technique and improve his race times. His positivity in training reflects on other swimmers making the whole lane train more efficiently. One of my biggest memories of him which sums up his character was after my 50m Freestyle at club champs 3 where he informed me that I was a little way off of my PB ... speaking the truth is sometimes needed in situations like that.
This swimmer has a great future in front of him and his parents must be so proud on raising such a lovely boy, the overall endeavour award goes to:
Charlie Padgham
Club Performance Awards:
We also like to recognise those swimmers who consistently perform to a high standard in training and at galas. This year we have tried to select one boy and one girl from each age group.

Tony Amos Cup:
Tony Amos was very much associated with the non-swimming end of the pool, this award has been based around the younger swimmers where they are either swimmer of the year or most promising young swimmer.
I first met this swimmer in stage 5 swimming lessons around five years ago. His biggest struggle was Breastroke leg kick until FINALLY one day he mastered it. I then recommended he joined the swimming club as I saw how much potential he had so he joined at the age of eight. From there he has improved massively and is now one of the fastest 12 year olds in the club and has achieved a qualifying time in the 50m Freestyle which he will be swimming next week in counties. He is currently 5th fastest in the county with only 300ths of a second away from second place meaning he is likely to make the final in 50m freestyle and could even be in a chance of medal. This boy is enthusiastic, has a heart of gold and is a real team player. I am so proud with how much he has achieved. This years Tony Amos award goes to:
Alex Twyford
Chairmans Shield:
I am now going to pass you onto Kevin Binns to present the chairmans shield.
This year has been one of the most difficult in terms of choosing the winner of this award. There have been a number of swimmers performing extremely well at Open Meets on a regular basis. Off the back of these excellent performances we have 15 swimmers accepted into this years County Champs (starting next weekend), entered in a total of 37 events - I think this is more than we have had for a long time.
However, in the end one swimmer just edged it in terms of overall achievement at Open Meets. He swam a total of 28 events across the year and remarkably got a PB in 20 of those swims - almost 75% hit rate. He was also a pleasure to have poolside.
This years Chairmans Shield goes to:
Jake Gourd
Gala Performance:
Im now going to hand you over to this years club captains; Nick Stockwell, Eleanor Kirwan, Nathan Strugnell, Kemi Olawande and Daniel Westlake who have chosen this years gala performance award for one girl and one boy. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank them for their efforts this year. They have done an amazing job marshalling the swimmers and supporting the coaches and ensuring the galas run smoothly.
Gala Performance Boys Award: - Tom Jobson
Gala Performance Girls Award: - Ruby Qureshi
Vice-Chairmans Shield:
This next award is based on contribution to the club. So many people make such great contributions however there is one person we felt really deserves recognition this year for everything she has done and continues to do. For the past 4 5 years this person has made a massive contribution to the club on both the coaching team and the committee. She has put 1000s of hours into coaching various squads to the point where some years we simply could not run our weekly schedule without her. The main thing that makes this coach so special is how her heart really is with the kids, she really wants to see them succeed in everything, whatever the age or ability of the child. If youve ever received positive feedback or a well done from this coach you will know how good it makes you feel. I have actually got a few swimmers to come up just to say a few words about this coach:
[Cue swimmers]
This person has also been heavily involved on the committee over many years where she organises Swim 21 which is a MASSIVE job on top of her full-time job already. Swim 21 is the ASAs club development model which allows the club to assist its swimmers in order to maximise their full potential, its an essential thing to have in order for the club to progress. This person is stepping down this year for Swim 21 but we would like to thank her for doing this for so many years.
I am so lucky to have met this lovely woman as I have learnt so much from her. The Vice-Chairmans shield goes to:
Lou Gooden
Presidents Cup:
This next award goes to overall swimmer of the year based on whoever got maximum club championship points. Not only did this female achieve maximum club championship points but she also broke 9 club championship records. Its also worth mentioning that this swimmer also competed in National Masters this year in Sheffield where she got 1 gold and 2 silver medals plus also got 4 East Region masters records for the 18-24 age group, an amazing achievement.
Alison Binns
Willis Shield:
Now for the Willis shield. Its for somebody whos involvement and commitment to swimming and general contribution to the club. This person returned to coaching for the club 2.5 years ago and has been a coach for 9 years. He is loved by every swimmer I talk too. It was only the other month that I hear swimmers saying that this person is there favourite coach! In 2016, he took on the role of poolside manager in which he put in a huge amount of hours into progressing the clubs structure onto its next stage of development by including points into the criteria of squad changes. This has led to swimmers training in lanes of swimmers abilities which in turn has strengthened session efficiency. This person also took on an active weekly role in coaching for the club on a Tuesday and Sunday. He has now stepped down as poolside manager but will continue his coaching commitments which we are so thankful for as he truly is an incredible coach. This years Willis Shield goes to
Neil Fraser
Gala Awards: - We like to give recognition to anyone who has represented Bushey at a swimming gala, a way of saying thank you as without you guys we wouldnt hold our current league positions that the club has worked so hard to maintain. Whether you have swam in Herts Major League, Peanuts, Arena or the Isabel Galas we would like to present to you an award to mark your commitment, performance and reliability.
