Awards]
We now move to the bit you have been waiting for - when we recognise the achievements of all our club swimmers and present awards to a large proportion of them to mark their endeavour and success. I am pleased to welcome Wendy Cook our President to join us to present tonight's awards.
A special reminder to the winners: some of these awards (the cups and shields) are only yours for a year – many of them are very old and some are very valuable. Please do look after them – treat them with care and clean them with the proper cleaning materials. If you get one of these awards, you will get an insurance statement that needs to be signed and returned to the Treasurer immediately. Because you cannot keep these trophies we will at next year’s AGM give you a replica award and certificate to mark the achievement – the replicas and certificates for our 2012 trophy winners are over there waiting for collection.
Also if you receive an award and are no longer a member of the club, we have special replica awards and certificates for you to collect tonight.
Speed Award Certificates
During 2013 the club has continued to monitor progress of our swimmers using the ASA Sprint Awards. The times are shown on the club website.
When a swimmer achieves the qualifying times in all four competitive strokes and the individual medley we present them with their certificate at the Annual Awards Ceremony. I would like to mention that in 2013, we again saw an exceptional number of swimmers achieving these competitive swimming performance awards. So tonight we would like to congratulate swimmers in each of the following categories:
Bronze Award

However special mention goes to those swimmers who on the night of the club champs swim the fastest time recorded at the club championships for the event.
We had several club records swum at the club champs, with one swimmer breaking their own record during the year. The full list of new club championship records is now being shown:

The 200IM competition is always tricky as you have to be able to swim two lengths of all four strokes, one after the other. This can lead to disqualification in some cases, particularly when tiredness sets in. We are very pleased tonight to present the age group winners for the 200IM competition:-

Most Improved Swimmer Cup
This category always provokes a lively debate. We consider gala performance, club champs results and time trials in terms of competition results. Then we add: development of style and stroke, the technical areas of starts and turns. Attitude, behaviour and commitment also feature and of course we look at the overall development of the swimmers. In 2013 two of our swimmers despite healthy and protracted debate proved inseparable…...
· This year the Most Improved Swimmer(s) Cup goes to Briony Gooden and Chiara Brown
Endeavour Plaques
The next set of awards is made to swimmers who have really worked hard at their swimming throughout 2013. Teachers nominate swimmers for these awards and it was especially pleasing that so many swimmers were deserving of this recognition in 2013. The awards for endeavour in 2013 go to:

Overall Endeavour Award
Training hard and training smart are equally important. The teachers do notice who is listening and trying to develop their strokes and drills. Ultimately performance in the water comes down to strength, stamina and technical ability. But the swimmers must constantly try hard and challenge themselves to develop. This means that presence and enthusiasm to learn need to be there in abundance. This swimmer’s efforts throughout the year met these criteria fully and were an example to others. He has also been a pleasure to teach and a joy to have in the club.
· This year the Bill Dowse goblet for Endeavour goes to Joe Fagan
Club Performance Awards
The club likes to give special recognition to those swimmers who have performed consistently to a high standard for the club at training sessions and galas. The Club performance awards for 2013 are being presented to the following eleven swimmers who have been nominated by the club teachers and coaches.

Tony Amos Cup
The Tony Amos award is usually presented to one of our younger swimmer to recognise Tony’s interest in teaching juniors. This year the Tony Amos award is presented to one of our younger swimmers who always has a smile at poolside during training and galas. She has been a key member of the gala squads swimming all 4 strokes in competitive galas during the year. She also helped make sprint freestyle a family event this year by winning the junior 50m sprint with her sister winning the open event.
· The Tony Amos cup goes to Laura Jones
Chairman’s Shield
The Chairman's Shield is awarded to the swimmer who has achieved the best results in Open Competitions. As you will see from the Open Meet report in the pack, we have had another busy year. Many swimmers have performed extremely well at Open Meets, but the highlight was County Championships. The separate report on the championships shows the fantastic achievements by our swimmers. However, one swimmer achieved 2 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze and placed 4th overall in her age group. For this achievement
The Chairman’s Shield goes to Erin O'Meara
Gala Performance
The next two awards are made by our Club Captains for 2013: Louis Rose and Tayla Gilbert. Before this award is presented, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank Louis and Tayla along with Alex for their efforts this year. They have done an amazing job marshalling the swimmers and supporting the coaches and ensuring the galas run smoothly.
In 2013 we have witnessed some excellent swimming within our representative squads. It is pleasing to see that this year we have seen many new faces some who have come through the Bushey ranks from and early age and some who have joined us from other clubs. All of this bodes well for 2014.
The two swimmers recognised tonight have been key contributors to the squads performing to the best of their ability. They are both highly motivated always looking to improve performance to gain maximum results for the team.
This year the Girls Captain’s award goes to
· Gala Performance Girls Award goes to Laura Bailey
The Boys Captain’s award goes to
· Gala Performance Boys Award goes to Joe Holden
And so to the final awards of the evening.
Vice Chairman’s Shield
The Vice Chairman’s Shield is awarded at the discretion of the teachers, and recipients are those who have made significant contributions to club activities. Whilst many awards were debated long and hard, this one was easy and unanimous…..
The award goes to someone who has made a huge contribution to the club in so many ways. As is often the case with recipients of this particular award much of their work goes unnoticed. Indeed in preparing this note, I am sure we have missed some of the areas where he has contributed….. these include
Swimming in many galas (including Arena league)
Pushing himself in training to be the best he can be, a role model in the pool
Working tirelessly to organise and promote the clubs involvement in the open meets
Running the web site
I am pleased to report for the second year in a row this award goes to a fellow Leeds United supporter …..this year
The Vice Chairman’s Shield for 2013 is awarded to Kevin Binns
President’s Cup
The President’s Cup is awarded to Bushey ASC’s overall swimmer of the year. There have been some outstanding performances this year across all the age groups, we have seen club records broken and many personal best times set. This year’s award winner achieved maximum club championship points, has won the junior 50m freestyle, the 200m Junior Freestyle, the 200m IM and has regularly represented Bushey in Galas often swimming up an age group or in some cases 2 age groups.
· The President’s Cup goes to Jack O’Malley
Erica Cup
The Erica Cup is awarded to recognise special achievement. In 2013,
This year one swimmer has continued to train in the pool and represent the club in Galas whilst making a tremendous contribution to the teaching side of the club.
He has engaged the swimmers through his excellent teaching and coaching ability and the fact that he in indeed still one of them.
Formal recognition has already been received in the form of a place on the national youth coaches academy and for all his hard work in the pool and on poolside ……
· The Erica Cup goes to Jack Jackson
Willis Shield
Our final award is a special and new award to recognise involvement and commitment to swimming and general contribution to the club.
In 2013 the club captains did an amazing job and were extremely well organised at galas whilst remaining committed to training. In addition they both stepped up to begin a teaching role.
The first winners of the Willis Shield are Tayla Gilbert and Louis Rose.
Gala Awards
Finally we have an award for everyone who has swum for the Club in an external gala during 2013. 104 swimmers - 57 girls and 47 boys have represented Bushey ASC – to save your hands from getting sore I will announce their names in alphabetical order – girls then boys in groups of 10. But please do show your appreciation now of their achievements and contribution to the club in 2013.
