[Open Meets report] [Achievement
Awards]
We now move to the bit you have been waiting for - when we recognise the achievements of all our club swimmers and present awards to a large proportion of them to mark their endeavour and success. I am pleased to welcome Wendy Cook -our Club President – to join us to present tonight's awards.
A special reminder to the winners: some of these awards (the cups and shields) are only yours for a year – many of them are very old and some are very valuable. Please do look after them – treat them with care and clean them with the proper cleaning materials. If you get one of these awards, you will get an insurance statement that needs to be signed and returned to the Treasurer immediately. Because you cannot keep these trophies we will at next year’s AGM give you a replica award and certificate to mark the achievement – the replicas and certificates for our 2008 trophy winners are over there waiting for collection.
Speed Awards Certificates
During 2009 the club has continued to monitor progress of our swimmers using the ASA Sprint Awards. The times are shown on the club website. We now have 71 swimmers registered for the scheme.
When a swimmer achieves the qualifying times in all four competitive strokes and the individual medley we present them with their certificate at the Annual Awards Ceremony. So tonight we have:
ØAt Bronze level: Chiara Brown; Taryn Fraser; Libby Matthews; Hannah Rose; Caroline Selwood; Jon Luke Summerfield; Eliot Zrihen
ØAt Silver level: Steven Binns; Kezia Brown; Alex Humphreys; George O’Malley; Jon Luke Summerfield; Sarah Wertheim; Debbie Wood; Charlie Wray
ØAt Gold level: James Allan; Steven Binns; Grace Miles; Laura Nightingale; Paul Norman; George O’Malley; Daniel Lever; Louis Rose; Jon Luke Summerfield; Becky Wood; Debbie Wood; Charlie Wray
ØAt Platinum level: Jon Luke Summerfield; Tamsyn Willis
Because of the continuing success of our swimmers we have introduced a new and very special award for the most significant achievement in terms of speed awards
The new FULL HOUSE AWARD is presented to those swimmers who achieve gold times at 25m and 50m in all 4 competitive strokes and the 100m Individual medley, plus platinum times over 100m in all 4 competitive strokes, the 200m freestyle, the 200m IM and the 1500metres freestyle. In 2009 – the second year of making this award the Full House has been achieved by
ØTamsyn Willis
and we have a certificate and the new award to present to her tonight.
1500 Metre Competition
In 2009 for unexpected reasons we had to swim the 1500 metre competition over two evenings – 1st and 15th November. Twenty two swimmers managed to complete the 60 lengths. To mark their achievement we are presenting them with a special medal tonight:

Most Improved Swimmer Cup
This category always provokes a lively debate. We consider gala performance, club champs results, time trials and open meets in terms of competition results. Then we add: development of style and stroke, the technical areas of starts and turns. Attitude, behaviour and commitment also feature and of course we look at the overall development of the swimmers. In 2009 one swimmer’s improvement in all these aspects was phenomenal.
ØThis year the Most Improved Cup goes to George O’Malley.
Endeavour Plaques
The next set of awards is made to swimmers who have really worked hard at their swimming throughout 2009. Teachers nominate swimmers for these awards and this year there were a lot of contenders. After much deliberation the awards for 2009 go to:

Overall Endeavour Award
Training hard and training smart are equally important. The teachers do notice who is listening and trying to develop their strokes and drills. Ultimately performance in the water comes down to strength, stamina and technical ability. But the swimmer must constantly try hard and challenge themselves to develop. This means presence and enthusiasm to learn need to be there in abundance. This swimmer’s efforts throughout the year were an example to others.
ØThis year the Bill Dowse goblet for Endeavour goes to Taryn Fraser.
Club Performance Awards
2009 is the second year that the club has given special recognition to those swimmers who have performed consistently to a high standard for the club at training sessions and galas. The Club performance awards for 2009 are being presented to the following nine swimmers who have been nominated by the club teachers and coaches.

Kezia Brown |

Rafal Kasperski |

Tony Amos Cup
The Tony Amos award is usually presented to one of our younger swimmer to recognise Tony’s interest in teaching juniors. This year the Tony Amos award goes to a young swimmer who is showing great promise. He is very keen and already ticking off many off the championship records in his age group. We will be watching his future progress with great interest.
ØThe Tony Amos cup goes to Jack O’Malley
Chairman’s Shield
The Chairman’s Shield is awarded to the swimmer who has achieved the best results in Open Competitions. The club has been encouraging participation in open meets and in 2009 several swimmers took part in these events and many also achieved personal best times. One of these swimmers was particularly successful and performed well at the county age group finals. In recognition of this:
ØThe Chairman’s Shield goes to Louis Rose.
Gala Performance
The next two awards are made by our Club Captains for 2009: Andrew Sewell and Tamsyn Willis.
This year the Girls Captain’s award goes to one of our swimmers who always sets a good example to her team mates and who gives her all when competing for the club. She has impressed the team manager and the Captains with her attitude and support for other team members.
Ø Gala Performance Girls Award goes to Holly Livingstone
The Boys Captain’s award goes to a young man who has turned in some excellent gala performances for the club. He has substantially reduced his times in all the strokes and his determination in the water has resulted in some excellent performances.
Ø Gala Performance Boys Award goes to Jon-Luke Summerfield
And so to the final awards of the evening.
Vice Chairman’s Shield
The Vice Chairman’s Shield is awarded at the discretion of the teachers, and recipients are those who have made significant contributions to club activities. This time we felt that the commitment and contribution of two of our members throughout 2009 deserved this accolade. The role of Club Captain is vital for the team. They set examples for their peers and the younger swimmers. Their help on poolside and especially in the organization of galas was great. This season BASC had a vibrant presence on poolside and that was in a large part orchestrated by our season’s Captains.
ØThe Vice Chairman’s Shield for 2009 is awarded to the Club Captains Andrew Sewell and Tamsyn Willis
President’s Cup
The President’s Cup is awarded to Bushey ASC’s overall swimmer of the year. There have been some very good performances this year across all the age groups, we have seen club records broken and many personal best times set. This year’s award winner is still a young swimmer. He is frequently called on at galas to swim up an age group as well as competing at his own level. He has performed extremely well in Club Championships, inter club Galas and in open meets.
Ø The President’s Cup goes to George O’Malley.
Erica Cup
The Erica Cup is not awarded every year. It is only awarded to recognise extraordinary achievement by a club swimmer. This year we are delighted to recognise the efforts of an exceptional swimmer who has been a member of Bushey for many years. There is a subtle difference in the style and approach to longer distance swimming to that of the sprinter. In this club over recent years one swimmer has consistently led the way in the longer distance events and at the same time he has managed to maintain his sprinting ability. He has set a fine example to all in his fantastic application to training and supportive approach to his team mates. The club records are awash with his name and deservedly so. We are delighted to award
Ø The Erica Cup to Michael Molloy.
Gala Awards
Finally we have an award for everyone who has swum for the Club in an external gala during 2009. 117 swimmers - 59 girls and 58 boys have represented Bushey ASC – to save your hands from getting sore I will announce their names in alphabetical order – girls then boys in groups of 10. But please do show your appreciation now of their achievements and contribution to the club in 2009.
