Achievement Awards

We now move to the exciting part of the evening when we recognise the achievements of all our club swimmers and present awards to a large proportion of them to mark their endeavour and success.  I am pleased to welcome Wendy Cook -our Club President – to join me to present tonight's awards.

A special reminder to the winners:  some of these awards (the cups and shields) are only yours for a year – many of them are very old and some are very valuable.  Please do look after them – treat them with care and clean them with the proper cleaning materials.  If you get one of these awards, you will get an insurance statement that needs to be signed and returned to the Treasurer immediately.  Because you cannot keep these trophies we will at next year’s AGM give you a replica award and certificate to mark the achievement – the replicas and certificates for our 2007 trophy winners are over there waiting for collection.

Speed Awards Certificates

During 2008 the club has continued to monitor progress of our swimmers using the ASA Sprint Awards.  The times are shown on the club website.   We now have 85 swimmers registered for the scheme.

When a swimmer achieves the qualifying times in all four competitive strokes and the individual medley we present them with their certificate at the Annual Awards Ceremony.  So tonight we have:

ØAt Bronze level: James Allan, Steven Binns,  Kezia Brown, Heather Grant-Davey, Kerry Holt,  Alex Humphreys, Jack Jackson, Grace Miles, Alexandra Miller, George O'Malley, Debbie Wood, Charlie Wray

ØAt Silver level: James Allan, Charlotte Henson, Miriam Jones, Daniel Lever, Grace Miles, Laura Nightingale, Louis Rose, Becky Wood

ØAt Gold level:  Katie Armitage, Bryony Earnshaw, Harry Edwards, Oliver Edwards, Alice Garnier, Charlotte Henson, Emily Raw

ØAt Platinum level: George Henson, Alison Binns

Because of the continuing success of our swimmers we have introduced a new and very special award for the most significant achievement in terms of speed awards

The new FULL HOUSE AWARD will be presented to those swimmers who achieve gold times at 25m and 50m in all 4 competitive strokes and the 100m Individual medley, plus platinum times over 100m in all 4 competitive strokes, the 200m freestyle, the 200m IM and the 1500metres freestyle.  In 2008 – the first year of making this award the Full House has been achieved by five of our swimmers:

Ø Alison Binns, Kevin Binns, George Henson, Michael Molloy, Eva Waddup

and we have a certificate [and the new award] to present to them tonight.

1500 Metre Competition

Last year  – for the first time we swam the 1500 metre competition at Bushey Grove Pool on a Saturday evening and although a number of swimmers had to pull out on the day because of illness we still had 23 swimmers complete the 60 lengths; all swimmers did it in less than 33 minutes and 5 of them set new club age group records.  To mark their achievement we are presenting all 23 swimmers with a special medal tonight:

Most Improved Cup

This category always provokes a lively debate. We consider gala performance, club champs results, time trials and open meets in terms of competition results. Then we add: development of style and stroke, the technical areas of starts and turns.  Attitude, behaviour and commitment also feature and of course we look at the overall development of the swimmers. Our task was made difficult by the quality of the contenders but one ‘rose’ to the top.

Ø This year the Most Improved Cup goes to Louis Rose.

Endeavour Plaques

The next set of awards is made to swimmers who have really worked hard at their swimming throughout 2008.  Teachers nominate swimmers for these awards and this year there were a lot of contenders.  After much deliberation the awards for 2008 go to:

Overall Endeavour Award

Training hard and training smart are equally important. The teachers do notice who is listening and trying to develop their strokes and drills. Ultimately performance in the water comes down to strength, stamina and technical ability. The winner of this year’s overall endeavour award has always been a strong swimmer but this year she has worked very hard and really concentrated on technical improvements to her strokes, starts and turns.

Ø This year the Bill Dowse goblet for Endeavour goes to Alice Garnier.

Club Performance Awards

For 2008 the club has introduced a new category of award to recognise those swimmers who have performed consistently to a high standard for the club at training sessions and galas.  The new Club performance awards are being presented for the first time tonight to the following swimmers who have been nominated by the club teachers and coaches.

Steven Binns

Kezia  Brown

Harry Edwards

Heather Grant Davey

George Henson

Molly Harland

Daniel  Lever

George O’Malley

Tony Amos Cup

The Tony Amos award is usually presented to one of our younger swimmer to recognise Tony’s interest in teaching juniors.  This year the Tony Amos award  goes to a swimmer who has impressed her teachers and has been a pleasure to watch in the water.  Despite her age she has developed a lovely style and is constantly improving. We have high hopes for her future and have great pleasure in making this award.

Ø The Tony Amos cup goes to Charlotte Garcia

Chairman’s Shield

The Chairman’s Shield is awarded to the swimmer who has achieved the best results in Open Competitions.  The club has been encouraging participation in open meets and in 2008 many more swimmers took part in these events. When we reviewed the performance of our swimmers in open competitions we were delighted to find that so many had taken part, many for the first time, and that they had also achieved personal best times. However, one swimmer stood out. This swimmer achieved first place and county age group record times in all the events she entered. This performance level is remarkable and reinforces the strength in depth and ethos of our club.

Ø The Chairman’s Shield goes to Sue Armitage.

Gala Performance

The next two awards are made by our Club Captains for 2008:  Michael Molloy and Lauren Raw.  This year the Girls Captain award goes to one of our swimmers who has shown a willingness to take on personal challenges and support the team in the gala events she has been entered for. She pays attention during training and does her best  to follow the training objectives given by the coaches.  She always sets a good example to her team mates and we know she gives her all when competing for the team.

Ø Gala Performance Girls Award goes to Helen Clifford

The Boys club captain award goes to a young man who sets a great example in supporting his team mates during galas. We have all heard him cheering and encouraging others to perform well. He follows his own advice and across the year has turned in some excellent gala performances for the club.

Ø Gala Performance Boys Award goes to  Andrew Sewell

So to the final awards of the evening.

Vice Chairman’s Shield

This year the Vice Chairman’s Shield is awarded to a member of the club who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to develop the club. This has taken an enormous amount of time and dedication. He has supported, led, challenged and inspired those of us who have worked along side. All this work and unselfish effort has been to support the ambitions of the club towards its SWIM 21 Goal.

Ø The Vice Chairman’s Shield for 2008 is awarded to Derek Swannick

President’s Cup

The President’s Cup is awarded to the overall swimmer of the year.  There have been some very good performances this year across all the age groups, we have seen club records broken and many personal best times set.  This year’s award winner has truly excelled and has not only has she achieved maximum points in club championship events she has broken an astounding 5 Club championship records. Three of these records had stood since the 1980’s!  She has also won all the girls freestyle sprint middle distance and long distance events in 2008.  As well as achieving success in our own events this swimmer has also competed exceptionally well in the inter club galas and leagues while representing the club and also in Open events.

Ø The President’s Cup goes to Alison Binns.

Erica Cup

The Erica Cup is not awarded every year.  It is only awarded to recognise extraordinary achievement by a club swimmer. This year we are delighted to recognise the efforts of an exceptional young swimmer. He has achieved maximum points in his club championship age group events in 2008 and broken two club championship records in the process.  Even more impressively, for the last 2 years the club has entered the very challenging National League. The London Division in which we compete has pitted our swimmers against some of the best swimmers in the country. One of our swimmers Harry was consistently outstanding and won his individual events. This is a remarkable achievement for a swimmer who is a member of a small club and to applaud this achievement we are delighted to award the Erica Cup

Ø The Erica Cup goes to Harry Edwards.

Gala Awards

Finally we have an award for everyone who has swum for the Club in an external gala during 2008.  115 swimmers have represented Bushey ASC – to save your hands from getting sore I will announce their names in alphabetical order – girls then boys in groups of 10.  But please do show your appreciation now of their achievements and contribution to the club in 2008.
