[Open Meets report] [Achievement
Awards]
We now move to the bit you have been waiting for - when we recognise the achievements of all our club swimmers and present awards to a large proportion of them to mark their endeavour and success. I am pleased to welcome Wendy Cook our President to join us to present tonight's awards.
A special reminder to the winners: some of these awards (the cups and shields) are only yours for a year – many of them are very old and some are very valuable. Please do look after them – treat them with care and clean them with the proper cleaning materials. If you get one of these awards, you will get an insurance statement that needs to be signed and returned to the Treasurer immediately. Because you cannot keep these trophies we will at next year’s AGM give you a replica award and certificate to mark the achievement – the replicas and certificates for our 2013 trophy winners are over there waiting for collection.
Also if you receive an award and are no longer a member of the club, we have special replica awards and certificates for you to collect tonight.
Speed Award Certificates (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum)
During 2014 the club has continued to monitor progress of our swimmers using the ASA Sprint Awards. The times are shown on the club website.
When a swimmer achieves the qualifying times in all four competitive strokes and the individual medley we present them with their certificate at the Annual Awards Ceremony. I would like to mention that in 2014, we again saw an exceptional number of swimmers achieving these competitive swimming performance awards. Most Improved Swimmer Cup: -
This next award is for our overall most improved swimmer. This person has come out of the shadows and right into the lime light over the course of this year. He has developed a real passion for swimming, he now has the ambition and skill to perform to a high standard in competition and in training.
I used to think he was a very negative person, he didn’t realise how much potential he had, never really believed how fast he could become. He used to say to me “I’m not going to win this” which was a mind-set that I wanted to change however I soon realised that this wasn’t a negative attitude at all but a modest one. He made the 50m sprint finals at Club Champs 3 at just 13 years of age, swam insane in internal club test sets such as the T20 where he came 4th out of the entire club. He has also reached county level in Freestyle and Breastroke and will be competing at County Champs in March.
This swimmer always performs to his best and is a very good role model for the other boys to look at and adopt. A couple of us as coaches have developed a strong bond with him which I believe is the key to his growing success. He’s prone to getting toe cramp, is still trying to touch his feet in land training and will always without fail ask if we can do relays at the end of each session. He’s come a long way and I am so proud of him. With a unanimous decision amongst the coaches, this years ‘Most Improved Swimmer’ goes to:
Nick Stockwell.
Endeavour Plaques: -
We also like to recognise swimmers who consistently work hard in training and always approach swimming with a positive mind set. We have ‘tried’ to select one boy and one girl from Amos 1, 2, Transition, Baker, Cook, Dowse and Erica for an Endeavour plaque.

Overall Endeavour Award (Bill Dowse Goblet): -
We now need to present the overall endeavour award. This swimmer consistently attends all 7 hours of training per week and tries her hardest each session. She is enthusiastic and is keen to improve her stroke. What has been outstanding recently is her stamina capabilities reflected in the test sets where she came 2nd out of the whole club for the 10x 100m swim which is simply outstanding. She’s a great role model and sets the training standard for the top squad high. This year’s Bill Dowse Goblet goes to
Chiara Brown.
Club Performance Awards: -
We also like to recognise those swimmers who consistently perform to a high standard in training and at galas. This year we have ‘tried’ to select one boy and one girl from each age group.

Tony Amos Cup: -
Since 2002 because Tony Amos was very much associated with the non-swimming end of the pool, the award has been based around the younger swimmers either ‘swimmer of the year’ or ‘most promising young swimmer’. I can reveal that this young lady has proved herself to be ‘most promising young swimmer’ in the club, her enthusiasm on pool side is overwhelming and she has become very keen in doing galas and open meets. She trains hard and has recently been moved up the Early Competitive squad. She has a bright swimming future ahead of her and us as coaches promise to give her every bit of guidance she needs to become a success. The years Tony Amos cup goes to:
Ruby Qureshi.
Chairman’s Shield: -
This next award is for the swimmer who has achieved the best results in Open Events.
Open events are classified as events that are open to any registered ASA swimmer and NOT internal or Club gala events. I am pleased to announce that this years chairmans shield goes to a female who pretty much enters every Open Meet there is and very much deserves every success that she has had this year. It goes to:
Kezzie Brown
Performance: -
I’m now going to hand you over to this year’s club captains; Elizabeth Shermer, Charlie Wray, Briony Gooden and Shasheen Payoe who have chosen this year’s gala performance award for one girl and one boy. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank Elizabeth and Charlie along with Briony and Shasheen for their efforts this year. They have done an amazing job marshalling the swimmers and supporting the coaches and ensuring the galas run smoothly.
Gala Performance Girls Award: - Kiki Gallimore
Gala Performance Boys Award: - Joe Elsen
Vice-Chairman’s Shield: -
This next award is based on contribution to the club. This person has done so much for the club in more ways than you can imagine.
Howard Willis
Presidents Cup: -
This next award goes to overall swimmer of the year based on whoever got maximum club championship points. Not only did this swimmer receive maximum points but she also received two club championship records, the vice chairman’s shield goes to:
Kezzie Brown
Willis Shield: -
Now for our newest addition, the Willis shield which was awarded for the first time last year. It’s for somebody who’s involvement and commitment to swimming and general contribution to the club. This person is currently girl’s club captain where she has put her life and soul into organising everyone’s roles and duties in external and internal galas. Not only that but she has now developed into a very effective coach for the Early Competitive squad, the kids absolutely love her! They love her partly because they without fail receive chocolate after a test set but mainly because she is a fun, loveable and a knowledgeable coach who I truly believe will flourish into one of the greatest coaches Bushey has ever had. This year’s Willis Shield goes to –
Elizabeth Shermer
Erica Cup: -
(Awarded for special achievement only, not awarded every year. To be based on swimmer’s all round achievement in club activities and representing the club)
Jack Jackson
Gala Awards: -
We like to give recognition to anyone who has represented Bushey at a swimming gala, a way of saying thank you as without you guys we wouldn’t hold our current league positions that the club has worked so hard to maintain. Whether you have swam in Herts Major League, Peanuts, Arena or the Isabel Galas we would like to present to you, for the first time ever, a dog tag to mark your commitment, performance and reliability.
