Achievement Awards

We now move to the bit you have been waiting for - when we recognise the achievements of all our club swimmers and present awards to a large proportion of them to mark their endeavour and success.  I am pleased to welcome Wendy Cook, our President, to join us to present tonight's awards.

A special reminder to the winners:  some of these awards (the cups and shields) are only yours for a year – many of them are very old and some are very valuable.  Please do look after them – treat them with care and clean them with the proper cleaning materials.  If you get one of these awards, you will get an insurance statement that needs to be signed and returned to the Treasurer immediately.  Because you cannot keep these trophies we will at next year’s AGM give you a replica award and certificate to mark the achievement – the replicas and certificates for our 2010 trophy winners are over there waiting for collection.

 

Speed Awards Certificates

 

During 2011 the club has continued to monitor progress of our swimmers using the ASA Sprint Awards. The times are shown on the club website. 

 

When a swimmer achieves the qualifying times in all four competitive strokes and the individual medley we present them with their certificate at the Annual Awards Ceremony.  I would like to mention that in 2011, we saw an exceptional number of swimmers achieving these competitive swimming performance awards. So tonight we have:

Because of the continuing success of our swimmers we have a very special award for the most significant achievement in terms of speed awards.

 

The BASC FULL HOUSE AWARD is presented to those swimmers who achieve gold  times at 25m and 50m in all 4 competitive strokes and the 100m Individual Medley, plus platinum times over 100m in all 4 competitive strokes, the 200m freestyle, the 200m IM and the 1500m freestyle.  In 2011 – the fourth year of making this award the Full House has been achieved by five swimmers and we have certificates and an award to present to them tonight.

Club Championships

 

As usual we held three Club Championships during the year.  Points are awarded for each event and the overall age group winner for the boys and for the girls respectively is presented with the age group award.  In 2011 six Championship records were broken in the three galas. The full list of new club championship records is :

50 Metre Sprint Race Overall Winners

 

In addition to the Club Championship events we also hold some special races. 

The 50 metre sprint race is held at the third club championships. 

• The Junior Boy 50 metre sprint winner of the Wendy Cook Shield was Robert Shermer.

•  And the Junior Girl 50 metre sprint winner of the Wendy Cook Shield was Victoria Pope.

•  In the Open 50 metre competition for Boys, the Bryan Cook Shield was won by George Henson.

•  And in the Open 50 metre competition for Girls, the Bryan Cook Shield was won by Katharine Evans.

200 Metre Freestyle Race - Junior and Overall Winners

 

The 200 metre middle distance event was swum on 2^nd April.  We have trophies for the fastest Junior Boy and Girl swimmers in the event

• The Junior Boy 200m freestyle winner was Oliver Taverner

• The Junior Girl 200m freestyle winner was Victoria Pope

 

..and for the open event…

• The overall winner of the Boys’ 200m freestyle race was Rafal Kasperski

• And the overall winner of the Girls’ 200m freestyle race was Tamsyn Willis.

 

200 Metre Individual Medley Race Overall Winners

 

In 2011 the club’s other middle distance event, the 200m Individual Medley race was swum on 4^th December. The medals and pennants for these were not presented on the night, because we like to present these at tonight’s award ceremony. The  200IM competition is always tricky as you have to be able to swim two lengths of all four strokes, one after the other. This can lead to disqualification in some cases, particularly when tiredness sets in. We are very pleased tonight to present the age group winners for the 200IM competition:-

Most Improved Swimmer Cup

 

This category always provokes a lively debate. We consider gala performance, club champs results and time trials in terms of competition results. Then we add: development of style and stroke, the technical areas of starts and turns.  Attitude, behaviour and commitment also feature and of course we look at the overall development of the swimmers.  In 2011 one of our senior and long-standing swimmer’s improvement in all these aspects was striking.

• This year the Most Improved Swimmer Cup goes to Jack Jackson

The next set of awards is made to swimmers who have really worked hard at their swimming throughout 2011.  Teachers nominate swimmers for these awards and this year there were a lot of contenders.  After much deliberation the awards for 2011 go to:

Overall Endeavour Award

 

Training hard and training smart are equally important. The teachers do notice who is listening and trying to develop their strokes and drills. Ultimately performance in the water comes down to strength, stamina and technical ability.  But the swimmers must constantly try hard and challenge themselves to develop. This means that presence and enthusiasm to learn need to be there in abundance.  This swimmer’s efforts throughout the year met these criteria fully and were an example to others. She has also been a pleasure to teach and a joy to have in the club.

• This year the Bill Dowse goblet for Endeavour goes to Lara Sulaman

 

Club Performance Awards

 

The club likes to give special recognition to those swimmers who have performed consistently to a high standard for the club at training sessions and galas.  The Club performance awards for 2011 are being presented to the following nine swimmers who have been nominated by the club teachers and coaches.

 

 

Tony Amos Cup

 

The Tony Amos award is usually presented to one of our younger swimmer to recognise Tony’s interest in teaching juniors.  This year the Tony Amos award goes to a young swimmer who has already shown great promise (particularly at breast stroke). She is very keen and  has achieved 10 PBs in 14 events during 2011.  We will be watching her future progress with great interest.

Chairman’s Shield

 

The Chairman’s Shield is awarded to the swimmer who has achieved the best results in Open Competitions. We have had a number of swimmers competing in various Open Meets this year, including Herts County Championships and for the first time, a representative in the East Region Championships. This swimmer placed 2nd overall in his age group at the County Championships and went on to gain 2 bronze medals at the Regional Championships.  For this achievement

Gala Performance

 

The next two awards are made by our Club Captains for 2011:  Ben Bateman and Charlotte Henson.

 

This year the Girls Captain’s award goes to one of our swimmers who has impressed us with her attitude to training and willingness to help during the course of the year and who has contributed to the success of the club at all levels.

• Gala Performance Girls Award goes to Victoria Pope

 

The Boys Captain’s award goes to a young man who trains regularly and has competed in Peanuts, Herts Major League and National Swimming League, achieving PBs at every gala.

• Gala Performance Boys Award goes to Jack Fagan

 

And so to the final awards of the evening.

 

Vice Chairman’s Shield

 

The Vice Chairman’s Shield is awarded at the discretion of the teachers, and recipients are those who have made significant contributions to club activities. In 2011 there was one person who made a massive contribution – as a Committee member and as a swimming official.  In 2011 he wrestled with the membership records and ASA membership on behalf of the club. He also qualified as an ASA Starter and officiated at numerous county, local and club events.  We unanimously agreed this deserved to be recognized formally and publicly and so

 

• The Vice Chairman’s Shield for 2011 is awarded to Jon Wood

 

President’s Cup

 

The President’s Cup is awarded to Bushey ASC’s overall swimmer of the year.  There have been some very good performances this year across all the age groups, we have seen club records broken and many personal best times set.  This year’s award winner is the only swimmer to achieve maximum club championship points.

Erica Cup

 

The Erica Cup is awarded to recognise special achievement. In 2011, one swimmer has continued to improve her times, and has consistently represented Bushey at all competitions, including Open Meets, County Championships and all Bushey meets. She has been focused, reliable and an exemplary member of the club. We are delighted to award
