BASC started its Social year with a well attended AGM and Awards evening in January which set the tone for a wide variety of events throughout the year including theatre trip, discos, quiz and bbq.
After some of the teenage members of the Club asked if a social event could be organised for them, we ran the first of two very successful member’s discos in June and followed up with a New Year’s disco.
The annual BBQ in July was for the first time held at Queen’s School and a warm summer’s afternoon saw us enjoy great food and entertainment as well as the opportunity to chat and relax away from poolside. We also combined the event with 5 minutes business as, having tucked in to the BBQ fare, we presented the new constitution for adoption at an open air Extraordinary General Meeting before getting stuck into desserts. Many thanks to Caroline Garnier for organising a splendid afternoon.
The 10 pin bowling evening planned for September was unfortunately cancelled as we could not raise enough interest. So we plan to run the event a little later in 2008 to allow everyone to get back in to the swing of things after the Summer break.
In November we held the annual quiz night, with over 110 people attending a fun evening at the Metropolitan Police Club. Once again the anoraks won the quiz and while the rest of us tried valiantly to give them a run for their money everyone enjoyed the buffet, raffle and free flowing beer and wine.
The finale was a trip to see Watford’s Panto at the Palace Theatre and it was great to see families as well as groups of younger swimmers all joining in with “it’s behind you”, “oh yes he did” and the Hokey Cokey.
Please keep an eye on the web site to see the social events in 2008. BASC views the social side of the club as having just as an important part as the swimming and we are therefore always looking for people to come forward to help out in any way in organising an event. If you could help organise one of the summer or Autumn events or would like to get together with a group of friends to join the Social Committee, talk to Paul Scott or Jacky Summerfield.
A bookings form for tickets for the dinner Dance will be available from this weekend on the Sunday Reception Desk. Please put your name down and if you can bring friends better still. The date in your diary – Saturday 8 March 2008.
