Achievement Awards

We now move to the exciting part of the evening when we recognise the achievements of all our club swimmers and present awards to a large proportion of them to mark their endeavour and success.

A special reminder to the winners:  some of these awards (the cups and shields) are only yours for a year – many of them are very old and some are very valuable.  Please do look after them – treat them with care and clean them with the proper cleaning materials.  If you get one of these awards, you will get an insurance statement that needs to be signed and returned to the Treasurer immediately.  Because you cannot keep these trophies we will at next year’s AGM give you a replica award and certificate to mark the achievement – the replicas and certificates for our 2006 trophy winners are over there waiting for collection.

Speed Awards Certificates

During 2007 the club has continued to monitor progress of our swimmers using the ASA Sprint Awards.  The times are shown on the club website.   We now have 73 swimmers registered for the scheme.

When a swimmer achieves the qualifying times in all four competitive strokes and the individual medley we present them with their certificate at the Annual Awards Ceremony.  So tonight we have:

Ø      At Bronze level: Katie Armitage, Louis Rose, Sarah Wertheim, Becky Wood

Ø      At Silver level: Katie Armitage, Harry Edwards, Alice Garnier, Kirsty Hawes, Paul Norman, Naomi Raw

Ø      At Gold level:  Alison Binns, Hannah Earnshaw, Stephen Raynsford, Robbie Waddup

But perhaps the most significant achievement in terms of speed awards this year is:

Ø      The Platinum level speed awards gained by Helen Clifford and Ian Dix

1500 Metre Competition

In last year’s 1500 metre competition 25 swimmers completed the 1500 metre swim – this is 65 lengths of the Haberdashers Pool; all swimmers did it in less than 31 minutes and 5 of them set new club age group records.  To mark this we are presenting all 25 swimmers with a special medal tonight:

Most Improved Cup

The teachers have seen significant improvement in many swimmers’ performances across the club in 2007 and there were clearly a number of swimmers in contention for this award.  In the end the teachers agreed it should go to two of our senior squad swimmers who over the last 12 months have demonstrated a continuing mature and positive attitude towards their swimming by really focusing on their training, and working hard on their technique and stamina.  As a result their PBs have improved, they have set new age group records, and they have had successes in club competitions and galas throughout the year.

Ø           This year the Most Improved Cup goes to Michael Molloy and Tamsyn Willis.

Endeavour Plaques

The next set of awards is made to swimmers who have really worked hard at their swimming throughout 2007.  Teachers nominate swimmers for these awards and this year there were a lot of contenders.  After much deliberation the awards this year go to:

Overall Endeavour Award

The overall endeavour award goes to a young swimmer who has shown real commitment to her swimming.  She has worked hard in her lessons with exemplary attendance, progressed in her swimming badges, and taken part in the autumn diving course. She is always smiling and ready for the next challenge.

Ø      This year the Bill Dowse goblet for Endeavour goes to Chiara Brown

Tony Amos Cup

The Tony Amos award is usually presented to one of our younger swimmer to recognise Tony’s interest in teaching juniors.  This year the Tony Amos award goes to a swimmer who has impressed his teachers with his enthusiasm, willingness to learn and excellent progress. Unfortunately George suffered an injury that prevented him training during the autumn but he has now returned and is carrying on where he left off.

Ø     The Tony Amos cup goes to George O’Malley

Chairman’s Shield

The Chairman’s Shield is awarded to the swimmer who has achieved the best results in Open Competitions.   In 2007 we had a good entry of club swimmers take part in the County BAGCAT competitions with a lot of success and we also took groups of swimmers to a number of other Open Meets.  A lot of personal best times were swum, and there were a number of contenders for this award.   One club member had particular success at open meets in the year – in the course of which he broke 7 club age group records and finished 12th in the Herts 13 year old boys’ age group championships  - so for 2007

Ø     The Chairman’s Shield goes to Andrew Sewell.

Gala Performance

The next two awards are made by our Club Captains for 2007:  Sophie & Philip Lockett:

This year the Girls Captain award goes to a young lady who has shown a commitment to improve her overall standard of performance in addition to showing that you can work hard and also enjoy your swimming as well. This year the

Ø     Gala Performance Girls Award goes to Katie Armitage

The boys club captain award goes to a young man who despite having very little experience with the competitive side of the club, was not found wanting and threw himself into it 110% producing some excellent results. This year the

Ø     Gala Performance Boys Award goes to Jack Jackson

So to the final awards of the evening.

Vice Chairman’s Shield

This year the Vice Chairman’s Shield does not go to an individual but to a group of swimmers.  For the first time the club entered the National Speedo League and came a very credible 9th place overall. This however does not tell the whole story, what was even more impressive during the course of these galas was the gutsy performance and the desire to achieve shown by every single swimmer. Without doubt this was the highlight in a very successful competitive calendar and it is for this that

Ø     The Vice Chairman’s Shield for 2007 is awarded to the

National Speedo League Gala Team

President’s Cup

The President’s Cup is awarded to the overall swimmer of the year.  There have been some very good performances this year across all the age groups, we have seen club records broken and many personal best times set.  This year’s award winner won their Club Championship age group with maximum points and took 3 Club Championship records at the same time.  He has put in some terrific swims in galas for the club and so in recognition of an outstanding year’s swimming

Ø    The President’s Cup goes to George Henson.

Erica Cup

The Erica Cup is not awarded every year.  It is only awarded to recognise extraordinary achievement by a club swimmer.  This year there was unanimous agreement by the teachers that the Erica Cup should be awarded to a swimmer who has shown loyalty, dedication and a fantastic team spirit. She has provided an excellent role model for all our swimmers and collected club records in the process

Ø    The Erica Cup goes to Eva Waddup.

Gala Awards

Finally we have an award for everyone who has swum for the Club in an external gala during 2007.  98 swimmers have represented Bushey ASC – to save your hands from getting sore I will announce their names in alphabetical order – girls then boys in groups of 10.
