Achievement Awards

We now move to the bit you have been waiting for - when we recognise the achievements of all our club swimmers and present awards to a large proportion of them to mark their endeavour and success.  I am pleased to welcome Wendy Cook our President to join us to present tonight's awards.

A special reminder to the winners:  some of these awards (the cups and shields) are only yours for a year – many of them are very old and some are very valuable.  Please do look after them – treat them with care and clean them with the proper cleaning materials.  If you get one of these awards, you will get an insurance statement that needs to be signed and returned to the Treasurer immediately.  Because you cannot keep these trophies we will at next year’s AGM give you a replica award and certificate to mark the achievement – the replicas and certificates for our 2016 trophy winners are over there waiting for collection.

Also if you receive an award and are no longer a member of the club, we have special replica awards and certificates for you to collect tonight.

Speed Award Certificates (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum)

During 2016 the club has continued to monitor progress of our swimmers using the ASA Sprint Awards. The times are shown on the club website.

When a swimmer achieves the qualifying times in all four competitive strokes and the individual medley we present them with their certificate at the Annual Awards Ceremony.  I would like to mention that in 2016, we again saw an exceptional number of swimmers achieving these competitive swimming performance awards.  Most Improved Swimmer Cup: -

This award is being given to two individuals that we have seen remarkable improvement since they joined the club in 2014.  Between them they hold 8 club records with a lot of very long standing records from Alison Binns and Katie Armitage being broken this year.  I remember one the girls coming to us with a very deep dive and a screw leg kick on breastroke, two years later that swimmer has revolutionised competitively but still doesn’t realise how good she is.  The other has always had a keen drive and passion for swimming.

Between them they have excelled at open meets, mainly because they want to beat one another but more because their sisterly bond with each other is so strong and so supportive it has led them to achieving qualifying times in 7 county events which they will be swimming over the next few weekends.

They really are both amazing to coach.  They listen and want to improve which is probably the main reason they are the most improved swimmers.  I give you …

Emily Presland and Jessica Presland.

Endeavour Plaques: -

We also like to recognise swimmers who consistently work hard in training and always approach swimming with a positive mind set.

Overall Endeavour Award (Bill Dowse Goblet): -

We now need to present the overall endeavour award.   This swimmer joined in 2012 where his technique and training standard has dramatically improved over the last two years.  I always remember him being keen but having absolutely no coordination whatsoever.  He used to dive like the titanic but has always had potential ready to be unlocked.  The last 12 months we have seen a big change.  His aerobic work has improved greatly and so has his diving.  He is the highest attendee in his squad which is why we have seen so much improvement and comes to every session and works so hard.  This year’s Bill Dowse Goblet goes to

                                                   Alexander Morgan.

Club Performance Awards: -

We also like to recognise those swimmers who consistently perform to a high standard in training and at galas.  This year we have ‘tried’ to select one boy and one girl from each age group.

Tony Amos Cup: -

Since 2002 Tony Amos was very much associated with the non-swimming end of the pool, this award has been based around the younger swimmers where they are either ‘swimmer of the year’ or ‘most promising young swimmer’.  I am pleased to announce that this year two swimmers are being awarded the Tony Amos Cup.

The first swimmer is a young male who joined the club towards the start of 2015 when he was 8.  He’s a pleasure to coach and has improved massively where he has competed in a variety of competitions such as club champs, time trials, major League, peanuts, the 1500m competition, as well as many open meets.  At the age of 9 he swam 2.5K in 59 minutes for charity at the swimathon, an incredible thing to do.  He is currently 6th in the county for 100m Freestyle which shows great promise for his competitive development.  One of his greatest strengths is his aerobic capacity in training where he leads his squad a long with another young lady who is also the receiver of this award.

She joined the club in 2014 where her technique was developed and worked on.  My coaching philosophy is that every swimmer can gain success if they work hard and have the desire to achieve, she certainly did this.  2016 became her shining year.  I first noticed a MASSIVE change when she came back from a family holiday where they had access to a long course pool.  Since then her whole attitude towards competitive swimming revolutionised where her strokes became insanely efficient and powerful.  This lady has achieved the unimaginable by learning to dive properly AND achieving county times all within the same year.  She didn’t just achieve consideration times but the very hard to get qualifying times for Counties giving her automatic entry where she is now swimming 50m and 100m Free and 50m Back and 100m Back over the next two weekends.  An INCREBILE achievement.  It has been a long time since development swimmers have achieved county times and is a true indicator that the clubs new structure is working.

This years Tony Amos cup goes to two amazing swimmers.  They are both a pleasure to coach.  They are:

Benjamin Taggart & Darcie Hambury.

Chairman’s Shield: -

This next award is for the swimmer who has achieved the best results in Open Events.

Open events are classified as events that are open to any registered ASA swimmer and NOT internal or Club gala events.  I really encourage more of you to do them this year in 2017 as the best way to improve competitively is to race more.  Kevin Binns is your contact for open meets and they can be entered via our website under ‘Open Meets’.  Kevin also analyses performance at meets and therefore is the person who has awarded this award.  We had 34 swimmers who competed in Open Meets in 2016 with many of them collecting medals and a host of PBs along the way.  One swimmer in particular was a regular attendee of Open Meets, generally swimming multiple events.  In total this person swam 30 events at Open Meets and achieved PBs in 15 of those swims, which is a phenomenal success rate across that many swims. In addition this person was always helpful to the team managers and younger swimmers.  Great news is that this persons efforts have also been rewarded by acceptance for a number of events at 2017 County Champs - the first time she will have swum in the champs.  This year's award goes to Emily Presland

Gala Performance: -

I’m now going to hand you over to this year’s club captains who have chosen this year’s gala performance award for one girl and one boy. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank them for their efforts this year. They have done an amazing job marshalling the swimmers and supporting the coaches and ensuring the galas run smoothly.

Gala Performance Girls Award: - Katherine Wheatley

Gala Performance Boys Award: - Joe Fagan

Vice-Chairman’s Shield: -

This next award is based on contribution to the club.  So many people make such great contributions to the club that it is always a challenge to single one out for recognition. This year has been more difficult than ever.

This years the award goes to two people where their family name that has been around since 2005 where their eldest daughter competed for the first time at the age of 9.  Since then their second daughter joined in 2008 also at 9 and they have been getting involved in a whole host of different voluntary jobs for the club.  There is so much that goes on behind the scenes from all the swimming which you are probably not aware of and these two lovely people play a major role.

Pam Brown, known to the teachers as Pammy -  she does SO MUCH for the teachers from booking pool time, organising teachers meetings, communicating training changes and so much more.  She’s been booking secretary for 6 years in the past and admin to the teachers for the past 3.  Pam is also host secretary at galas.  She is a true diamond and we will be sad to see her go at the end of the season.

Alan Brown, known to the teachers as Alan – in the past he has been 3 years as press secretary, been doing club champs for the past 6 years, vice chair for last 3 years with one being as acting chair.  Alan is also a J2 judge where he officiates at all of our internal and many external galas.

Together they make the ‘BrownPack’ and are a undeniably two of the best volunteers the club has had over the years.  They also arranged a couple of supper quizzes.  Both of them pulled through Bushey’s tough period and have come out the other side with a better and stronger club.  I cannot thank them enough for their hard work they have put in over the years.

This year the Vice-Chairman’s Shield is awarded to:

Pam & Alan Brown

Presidents Cup: -

This next award goes to overall swimmer of the year based on whoever got maximum club championship points.  Not only did this swimmer receive maximum points but she also received six club records in 2016, the presidents cup goes to:

Emily Presland

 Gala Awards: -

We like to give recognition to anyone who has represented Bushey at a swimming gala, a way of saying thank you as without you guys we wouldn’t hold our current league positions that the club has worked so hard to maintain.  Whether you have swam in Herts Major League, Peanuts, Arena or the Isabel Galas we would like to present to you an award to mark your commitment, performance and reliability.
