[Open Meets report] [Achievement
Awards]
We now move to the bit you have been waiting for - when we recognise the achievements of all our club swimmers and present awards to a large proportion of them to mark their endeavour and success. I am pleased to welcome Baz Long and Phil Holpin to join us to present tonight's awards.
A special reminder to the winners: some of these awards (the cups and shields) are only yours for a year – many of them are very old and some are very valuable. Please do look after them – treat them with care and clean them with the proper cleaning materials. If you get one of these awards, you will get an insurance statement that needs to be signed and returned to the Treasurer immediately. Because you cannot keep these trophies we will at next year’s AGM give you a replica award and certificate to mark the achievement – the replicas and certificates for our 2009 trophy winners are over there waiting for collection.
Speed Awards Certificates
During 2010 the club has continued to monitor progress of our swimmers using the ASA Sprint Awards. The times are shown on the club website.
When a swimmer achieves the qualifying times in all four competitive strokes and the individual medley we present them with their certificate at the Annual Awards Ceremony. So tonight we have:
At Bronze level: Kiri Baldwin; Jack Fagan; Tayla Gilbert; Vicky Humphreys; Elizabeth Leeland-Cunningham; Holly Livingstone; Charlie Mitchell; Jack O’Malley; Victoria Pope; Elizabeth Shermer; Lara Sulaman; Oliver Taverner.
At Silver level: Jack Fagan; Jack Jackson; Holly Livingstone; Libby Matthews; Charlie Mitchell; Hannah Rose; Eliot Zrihen.
At Gold level: Kezzie Brown; Kirsty Hawes; Eliot Zrihen
At Platinum level: Daniel Lever; Robbie Waddup
Because of the continuing success of our swimmers we have a very special award for the most significant achievement in terms of speed awards.
The BASC FULL HOUSE AWARD is presented to those swimmers who achieve gold times at 25m and 50m in all 4 competitive strokes and the 100m Individual Medley, plus platinum times over 100m in all 4 competitive strokes, the 200m freestyle, the 200m IM and the 1500m freestyle. In 2010 – the third year of making this award the Full House has been achieved by
Robbie Waddup and Rafal Kasperski
and we have certificates and an award to present to them tonight.
1500 Metre Competition
This took place on 18th July. Twenty seven swimmers managed to complete the 60 lengths. To mark their achievement we are presenting them with a special medal tonight: Firstly, the boys...

Most Improved Swimmer Cup
This category always provokes a lively debate. We consider gala performance, club champs results, time trials and open meets in terms of competition results. Then we add: development of style and stroke, the technical areas of starts and turns. Attitude, behaviour and commitment also feature and of course we look at the overall development of the swimmers. In 2010 one swimmer’s improvement in all these aspects was striking.
This year the Most Improved Swimmer Cup goes to Portia Thorpe
Endeavour Plaques
The next set of awards is made to swimmers who have really worked hard at their swimming throughout 2010. Teachers nominate swimmers for these awards and this year there were a lot of contenders. After much deliberation the awards for 2010 go to:

Overall Endeavour Award
Training hard and training smart are equally important. The teachers do notice who is listening and trying to develop their strokes and drills. Ultimately performance in the water comes down to strength, stamina and technical ability. But the swimmers must constantly try hard and challenge themselves to develop. This means presence and enthusiasm to learn need to be there in abundance. This swimmer’s efforts throughout the year met these criteria fully and were an example to others.
This year the Bill Dowse goblet for Endeavour goes to Victoria Pope
Club Performance Awards
The club likes to give special recognition to those swimmers who have performed consistently to a high standard for the club at training sessions and galas. The Club performance awards for 2010 are being presented to the following ten swimmers who have been nominated by the club teachers and coaches.

Tony Amos Cup
The Tony Amos award is usually presented to one of our younger swimmer to recognise Tony’s interest in teaching juniors. This year the Tony Amos award goes to a young swimmer who has already shown great promise (particularly at breast stroke where he is already achieving county qualifying times). He is very keen and already ticking off the championship records in his age group. We will be watching his future progress with great interest.
The Tony Amos cup goes to Oliver Taverner
Chairman’s Shield
The Chairman’s Shield is awarded to the swimmer who has achieved the best results in Open Competitions. We have had a number of swimmers competing regularly in Open Meets this year which is great to see. However, the top event we had swimmers at was the Herts County Championships and this year we had a swimmer who made finals and PB'd in a number of events and in particular picked up a bronze medal in 50m Breaststroke - an excellent swim. For this achievement:-
The Chairman’s Shield goes to Louis Rose
Gala Performance
The next two awards are made by our Club Captains for 2010: George Henson, Daniel Level and Robbie Waddup.
This year the Girls Captain’s award goes to one of our swimmers who has impressed us with her attitude to training and willingness to help during the course of the year and who has contributed to the success of the club at all levels.
Gala Performance Girls Award goes to Kezzie Brown
The Boys Captain’s award goes to a young man who is a regular trainer and his approach to swimming for BASC has really helped the team no matter the level of gala or event being swum.
Gala Performance Boys Award goes to Steven Binns
And so to the final awards of the evening.
Vice Chairman’s Shield
The Vice Chairman’s Shield is awarded at the discretion of the teachers, and recipients are those who have made significant contributions to club activities. In 2010 there was one person who made a massive contribution – as a Committee member and as a swimming official. In 2010 he not only produced our highly informative newsletter, he was a regular presence poolside talking to parents and rustling up volunteers, he also organized a highly successful and profitable quiz night for the club and in his spare time completed his Judge level 1 and level 2 qualifications attending nearly all of the club’s galas in the process. We unanimously agreed this deserved to be recognized formally and publicly and so
The Vice Chairman’s Shield for 2010 is awarded to Alan Brown
President’s Cup
The President’s Cup is awarded to Bushey ASC’s overall swimmer of the year. There have been some very good performances this year across all the age groups, we have seen club records broken and many personal best times set. This year’s award winner is our boys’ club captain who has excelled in galas and constantly improved his swimming times. During the last 12 months he has won all of his age group championship events and broken five club championship records in the process – a worthy winner -
The President’s Cup goes to George Henson
Erica Cup
The Erica Cup is not awarded every year. It is only awarded to recognise special achievement. This year we are delighted to recognise the efforts of an exceptional team who have been swimming members of Bushey for quite a few years. During 2010, their efforts and leadership at club events and galas have been outstanding. They have set a fine example to all our swimmers and have been identified by coaches and parents alike as working effectively as a team for the club. We are delighted to award
The Erica Cup to the Boys’ Club Captains – George Henson, Daniel Lever and Robbie Waddup
Gala Awards
Finally we have an award for everyone who has swum for the Club in an external gala during 2010. 88 swimmers - 48 girls and 40 boys have represented Bushey ASC – to save your hands from getting sore I will announce their names in alphabetical order – girls then boys in groups of 10. But please do show your appreciation now of their achievements and contribution to the club in 2010.
